The objectives include depositing a thin, dense glass layer onto a porous ceramic substrate which is permeable to hydrogen only. Clay substrates (approx. 35 mil thick), suitable for glass coating, were successfully prepared and sintered. A dense glass coating, applied to the clay using an air brush, showed no permeability to air at room temperature. Comparative uncoated clay samples showed permeability. Pre- and post sintering were performed in a tube furnace without producing cracks. In addition, electrophoretic deposition of silica onto clay discs was performed in an attempt to accurately control the layer thickness. High temperature test apparatus was assembled.
