Corrosion-Resistant Materials for Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants at Fort Bragg

Corrosion prevention and control technologies using advanced materials and coatings were implemented at the water treatment and wastewater treatment facilities at Fort Bragg, NC. This project demonstrated that: 1. Microsilica cement mortar and epoxy based coatings, approved for potable water according to National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) Standard 61. were applied to the potable water treatment filter tanks. These coatings form a high strength moisture barrier with a strong chemical/mechanical bond to brick and cementitious substrates. 2. Coal-tar epoxy coatings are efficacious in the presence of moderate concentrations of airborne chlorine and hydrogen sulfide gases and were used in wastewater treatment facilities. 3. Fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) doors, which provide excellent mechanical durability and superior resistance to sunlight and corrosion, especially in chlorine storage facilities, were installed. These technologies are applicable to other potable water treatment plants and wastewater treatment plants for Army and DoD installations, and can be expected to result in restoration of the plants to optimum operating conditions and significant cost avoidance due to increased service life.
