Operational Command and Control: Lessons for Today's Joint Force from Grenada, Somalia, and Kosovo

This paper examines operational command and control issues encountered during Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada, the deployment of Task Force Ranger in Mogadishu, Somalia, and Operation Allied Force in Kosovo. Within the area of command and control, the paper examines two specific topics. The first is the role of organizational structure on the planning and execution of these operations. The second topic covered is the coordination and integration of joint, multinational, and inter-governmental organization support during these conflicts. The paper then closes with recommendations for today's joint force based on lessons learned from the analysis of these three operations.
