摘要

The primary purpose of this study is to assist the United States Air Force (USAF) to decide where and when to invest effort and resources to research, develop, and implement a family of technology believed to offer solutions to the problem of automated machine-to-machine (M2M) interoperability. The USAF has identified the automation of interoperability between machines as a key enabler of net-centric warfare. In this study we assert that semantic technologies are needed to enable true M2M interoperability yet at the same time acknowledge that semantic technology is at early stage of adoption in the industry and has not been widely adopted by the Department of Defense (DoD). Similarly, semantic interoperability (SI) has yet to enjoy rich support from doctrine, training, leadership, or as common material solutions.
