First Watch on the First Term of Enlistment: A Summary and Update of Results from Version 1 of the First Watch Instruments

The First Watch project was designed by NPRST researchers to determine the core causes for first-term enlisted attrition in the Navy. This report presents results from the first of three different iterations of surveys used in that project. Results show that Sailor's attitudes toward the Navy and their career intentions change over the course of their first term and that measures such as stress, morale, met expectations, career intentions, organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and Person-Organization Fit were reliable predictors of attrition at various points in a Sailor's first term of enlistment.
