Methods for organizing functional materials at the nanometer level are essential for the development of novel fabrication technique. One of the most relevant areas of research in nanobiotechnology concerns technological utilization of self-assembly systems, wherein molecules spontaneously associate into reproducible supramolecular structures. Being composed of a single protein or glycoprotein species, bacterial cell surface layers (S-layers) represent the simplest biological membrane developed during evolution.
