The objective of this research project was to determine whether a suitable jet fuel could be made from animal fat and other bio feed stocks. A pilot production of 610 gallons of renewable synthetic fuel (termed R-8 and R- 8X for renewable and JP-8 like) was successfully accomplished. In 2008, a nomenclature of hydroprocessed renewable for jet (HRJ) was determined for these classes of fuels. Numerous fuel property tests, engine, combustor and pump demonstrations, and risk assessments were performed for the R-8 HRJ fuel. The R- 8 HRJ appears suitable as an aviation fuel blending stock up to 50 vol%. It is also concluded that the unblended and unadditized R-8 HRJ has poor lubricity.
