摘要

Future demands on the Air Force Warfighter will require dramatic advances in active materials utilized by the Warfighter (e.g., for remote, prolonged energy conversion and highly tunable sensing/response), as well as in the training and performance of the Warfighter (e.g., for enhanced memory and attention). Of equal importance for future Air Force technology is the training of U.S. graduate students in the development of such advanced materials and protocols for enhanced cognition. The BIONIC Air Force Center of Excellence has been focused on utilizing the expertise and capabilities of integrated teams of Georgia Tech faculty (from the Colleges of Engineering and Science), Emory University faculty, and Air Force researchers (from the Materials & Manufacturing Directorate and the Human Effectiveness Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory, AFRL) to: i) Fabricate and evaluate inorganic/organic nanocomposites for efficient, remote energy conversion, ii) Fabricate and evaluate inorganic/organic nanocomposites for tunable, adaptive surface structures, and iii) Develop tools and assessment methodologies for the optimization of critical cognitive processes.
