There are two principal methods of softening water for purpose of feeding loco boilers, commonly known as “lime and soda” and “base-exchange”.nWhen treatment of water for boiler feed is introduced on a section of a railway, softening has to be done at all the watering points of that section, to be of real use in increasing the engine mileage, and decreasing the cost of engine maintence.
