摘要

The four papers comprised in this monograph were written over the period 1937 to 1947 and they are printed in chronological order. Each is a study of some of the theoretical aspects of experimental work in progress in the Engineering Division of the National Physical Laboratory during that period. The greater part of the experimental work related to failure of materials by fatigue under alternating stresses and in the theoretical analysis chief attention is paid to this mode of failure. At the same time in some respects the theory is capable of wider application, and the bearing of the analysis on other modes of failure is therefore considered.nA change or discontinuity of section in a stressed component always results in a concentration of stress in its neighbourhood, and failure, particularly failure by fatigue, usually originates by a crack starting from such a region.
