TESTS ON THE FREEZING AND THAWING RESISTANCE OF CONCRETE KERBS

A previous report gave the results of tests on 27 commercially-made and 12 laboratory-made concrete kerbs subjected to 60 cycles of freezing and thawing. This report gives the later results, up to 152 cycles, which have been used to assess the freezing and thaw¬ing resistance of the kerbs in terms of the number of cycles required to produce a 2% loss in weight. This property has been related to the results of the trans¬verse strength and absorption tests given in B.S. 340 :1950 "Precast concrete kerbs, channels, edgings and quadrants".nIt was found in the investigation that the pressed kerbs were generally more resistant to frost damage than kerbs compacted by vibration.
