Torsional Analysis of Thin-Walled Shells with Closely Spaced Spars

The torsional shear flow distribution and rigidity of thin-walled structures with cross-sections symmetrical about an axis and with many internal spar webs is investigated. The number of internal spars is assumed to be large enough to consider them to be (diffused into) a continuous spar medium. The differential equation and boundary conditions which must be satisfied by the shear flows are determined from Bredt's theory of torsion. This equation is solved for rectangular, triangular, double wedge and trapezoidal cross-sections. Curves are plotted of the torsional rigidity and the maximum and minimum shear flows for the rectangular cross-section. The results are related to the rigidity and shear flows computed by Bredt's theory neglecting the internal spar webs. (Author)
