THE ELECTRONIC DIGITAL COMPUTER, A NEW TOOL FOR STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS

Those aspects of electronic digital computers which are of immediate interest to structural engineers are considered in some detail and recent advances in programming methods i.e. the process of writing instructions for such machines, are mentioned. The application of computers to certain structural design problems is discussed "both from the point of view of complex design and routine design cal¬culations;an example is given of a calculation of the latter type.nThe accessibility of computers to would-be users is considered and the need for co-ordinating bodies, working within the framework of the professional institutions and covering the diverse individual groups in the structural engineering field, is stressed.
