In some air tests on an experimental pump leakage flows through the back wearing rings were measured with the pump stationary and running. It was found that the pressure drop was hardly affected by rotation but the resulting friction coefficients were higher than commonly accepted values.nIt was found that the discharge coefficient of the flow through the balance hole was as high as 0.8, due to the fact that the fluid in the balance chamber was rotating almost as fast as the impeller.
