THE COMPACTION OF CONCRETE ROAD SLABS USING A VIBRATING ROLLER

This report describes a method of using a vibrating roller to compact the base course of a concrete road slab. Three 6 in. thick road slabs were laid by this method in January and in May 1958 and comments on the condition of the work after 8-1 2 months service are included in the report.nA vibrating roller proved a rapid and effective means of compacting concrete but the surface could not be rolled to within the tolerances of regularity normally specified for road work. However, for the majority of the work, the vibrating roller was used to compact the base course on which a more workable concrete top course 2 in. or 1 1/2 in.
