U.S. Army Chemical Corps Historical Studies, Gas Warfare in World War I: The 1st Division at Cantigny, May 1918

The capture of Cantingy by the 1st Division was prestige operation. In the attack on 27 May the 1st Division recaptured Cantigny, and what had been a slight salient in the French lines became a thorny salient in the German lines. Despite murderous HE and gas fire, the division held on to Cantigny itself. The present study chronicles the gas experience of the 1st Division in its seventy-teo days in the Cantigny sector, during which almost half of the total casualties suffered were the result of gas.
