This report describes a laboratory study of the breakage of Brantley Hard coal by impulsive forces. The results are expected to be of importance to those engaged in the design of percussive ploughs.nBlows were applied to small blocks of coal by means of a simple wedge-shaped cutting tool attached to the end of a pendulum. The mass and velocity of the cutting head at impact were varied to give different energies of blow. The effect of overburden pressure was not investigated.
