A technique is described for preparing and carrying out measurements of compressive strength on 1/2 in. cubes of vibrated mortar. The method was developed after preliminary experiments had indicated that 1/2 in. cubes compacted by hand were not suitable for the required tests.nThe report first describes experiments with hand-compacted cubes containing single-sized sands, then the development of a technique in which a graded sand is used and the cubes are vibrated, and finally the results of tests made to assess the magnitude of some of the factors contributing to the testing error.
