This note gives a method of taking account of the pressure rise along the tube axis in calculating the discharge characteristics of such valves and of calculating the distribution of hole area required to give a specified discharge characteristic. The results of some model tests are given both for valves discharging into free space and into bodies which incorporate a pipe bend. The tests confirm the rather surprising prediction that simple valves of this kind can be arranged to have zero pressure loss when fully open.
