LEARNING CURVES FOR COLOR IDENTIFICATION

In an earlier study (1) the senior author demonstrated that extended practice could produce a very significant practical in¬crease in the number of colors which could be identified on an-absolute basis. The observer in that study was able to learn to identify fifty colors with essentially zero;error, but only after ' very long practice. However, a substantial part of this prohibi¬tive amount of practice was obviously due to the way in which that research was conducted. Since the study was exploratory, the dis¬tribution of colors in the gamut under consideration was changed several times in an attempt to discover as nearly optimal a set as possible. In addition, the method of presentation was changed during learning.
