The paper tape is then processed to determine several quantities such as the average error rate, the variation in error rate as a function of the day of the week or the time of the day, and the distribution of errors within the 16-symbol words. This type of analysis indicated that the errors on digital data telephone circuits are not independent, but it left unanswered the question about the distri¬bution of the duration of noisy periods. About Z000 hours of this data have been re-analyzed in this report, in order to answer this question. The analysis of these data, will be given in the next section and then the implications to coding will be discussed.
