This-report presents a simple analysis of the action of a rectangular, rubber fluid seal for a reciprocating shaft. The results of this work predict that the leakage rate as measured in the apparatus should be proportional to the shaft speed raised to the 2-11 power but as the shaft speed tends to zero the index should approach 2. The mean experimental index for a 10 000:1 range of leakage rate and a 100:1 range of shaft speed was found to be 2-07. It is also shown that the leakage rate should be proportional to the fluid viscosity raised to the 1-11 power. By present¬ing the experimental results obtained over a viscosity range greater than 10:1 in a non-dimensional form, a single mean line was obtained thereby verifying this prediction.
