Limitations in cable size imposed by the difficulty of deep-sea installation mean high losses in the transmission of power from shore to distant submerged loads. However, these losses can be minimized by choosing the proper value of load impedance. Expressions are derived for this optimum value, and for sensitivity of transmission efficiency to this value. The results, for two typical cables operated at frequencies of 60 Hz and 400 Hz, are summarized as curves showing (a) maximum possible transmission efficiency vs cable length, (b) optimum termination impedance vs length, and (c) sensitivity of transmission efficiency to changes in both modulus and argument of termination impedance.
