When the equation for the motion of the door of a reflux valve in a retarding water flow is linearised, it takes a form that is easily integrated and the solutions are the same as those for transients in electrical networks.nAnalytical expressions are derived in terms of readily determined valve characteristics both for the variation of valve angle with time and the time lag between the reversal of water flow and the closing of the valve.nA comparison between these calculations and the measured per¬formance of two small reflux valves showed that inertia had very little effect, but it was possible for friction of the door on its pin to cause an appreciable additional lag in the closing of the door.nA formula is proposed for the minimum safe water reversal time and shows this to be approximately proportional to the initial door opening and to the valve size.
