The highlights of this program of research have been as follows: (1) the rapid screening of ideas at very high Mach numbers in the helium tunnel: the informa¬tion thus obtained has saved much time by properly directing research efforts both here and elsewhere (for example, the serious effects of thick hypersonic boundary layers or. control surfaces): (2) the capabilities of the shock tunnel in performing complex integrated experiments at extreme conditions: (3) the fine quantitative performance of interferometry in observation of high-temperature gases; (4) the direct applicability of theoretical studies of shock structure; and (5} the caution required in interpretation of shock tube data obtained with low initial pressures.
