The reasons for the choice of a series of uranium specimens in different metallurgical conditions to be irradiated in the Ispra-1 reactor are described. The effect of thermal cycling concomitant with irradiation and the effect of grain size on irradiation growth and swelling will be investigated.nThe various operations carried out for the preparation of specimens to be irradiated such as diluting of enriched uranium and thermal treatments chosen in order to obtain the required metallurgical structure are described.nThe work was carried out at Newcastle (England) in the laboratories of the Nuclear Research Centre of C,A, Parsons & Co. according to an agreement among the C.A. Parsons & Co., AGIP-Nucleare, and Comitato Nazionale per l'Energia Nucleare.
