A theoretical and experimental investigation has been made into the stability of a relief valve system with linear damping of the valve. Simple expressions are given for the minimum damping for stability with any length of pipe and for the maximum length of pipe for stability without damping when there are no pipe¬line losses. Equations are also given from which the damping for stability may be determined when the pipeline losses fall within specified limits.nThe damping required for the stability of a flat disc relief valve has been measured experimentally and there is satisfactory agreement between the ob¬served values and those calculated from the theory.
