COMMENTS ON SOME OF THE FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICAL CONCEPTS IN NAVAL ARCHITECTURE

As indicated in the preface, shipbuilding at the present time (1961) may be regarded partly as an art and partly as a science. This report is concerned with the scientific aspects of shipbuilding and, particularly, with certain fundamental physical concepts which play a major role in the scientific methods now in use. These concepts pertain chiefly to three branches of applied mechanics; namely, fluid dynamics, elasticity, and hydroelasticity, which deal chiefly with ideal physical systems.
