THE NBS HUMIDITY EXPERIMENT ON THE MANNED BALLOON FLIGHT STRATO-LAB HIGH NO.5

The results of the NBS humidity experiment on the mimed, balloon flight, Strato-Lab High No. 5, of May 4, 1961, are presented. The experi-mental apparatus consisted of a barium fluoride film hygrometer element and a specially-designed ohmmeter circuit. The apparatus provided, except for periodic references, continuous Indication of relative humidity, RH, through-out the flight. A magnetic tape record of the humidity transmission was analyzed and a printed record of modulation frequency for each alternate second of time during the flight was obtained. The indicated EH and dew or frost point corresponding to the modulation frequency were plotted versus altitude throughout the ascent of the balloon through the tropo¬sphere. The mean of 117 indications of RH in the 4 minutes before launch of the balloon was 70.8％ RH with an estimate of standard deviation of 1.3％ RH.
