A Study of the Operation of a Permanent Magnet D. C. Motor with Pulses

A study was made of what happens to a D. C. motor when it is run by pulses. The purpose for making the study was to determine an analytical method of predicting how a D. C. motor would behave when run by pulses so that it would be possible to design systems with motors excited in this manner without using a trial and error method. Transient response, transfer functions, input impedance, power dissipation, and methods of driving the motors are all discussed in the report. Also the frequency spectrums of various waves which might be applied to the motor are derived. These waves include pulse width and pulse amplitude modulated waves. Experimental techniques for measuring transient response and motor parameters are also discussed. (Author)
