STUDY AND ANALYSIS OF POSITION TECHNIQUES FOR OVER-OCEAN AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL

A study of techniques for supplying positional data on aircraft traversing oceanic areas to an air traffic control system was conducted. The purpose of the study was to determine which techniques might be technically feasible during the time period from the present to 1975. Results of this work will be used in subsequent efforts during which broad operational economic, and political factors will be considered.nFour approaches—reporting of air-observed position, a ship borne Rho-Theta network, land-based HF direction finding and ranging techniques, and dual ranging from land-based observation points using stationary satellites—were studied in de-tail, following a preliminary screening of techniques.
