Among the primary interfaces between man and the com¬puter is the query language, that interim language which bridges the gap between the highly specialized languages in which ma¬chines are programmed and the ordinary English of the user. In the past query languages have taken the form of artificial, quasi-English languages which bear slight resemblance to or¬dinary English but which are sufficiently simple syntactically, and sufficiently mnemonic lexically that the user can master them with less difficulty than the more specialized languages associated with computer technology;nThe purpose of this paper is to outline a recent theoretical advance in the science of linguistics which renders pos¬sible the use of natural English as a query language in computer ' based systems. The advantages of this approach are considered.
