In pursuing the main objective of this project--i. e. , discovering the mechanism of ionic; desensitization- -experimentation was performed on freshly-cut Gentin. teeth with sensitive exposed cervical areas, and teeth requiring endodontic treatment, wit!) the following results:n1. Ionic desensitization may be accomplished with many electro¬lytes, and with either direction of current, thus denoting that it is not a 'plating" effect.n2. The electrical tooth resistance of sensitive cervical areas remains essentially constant during treatment.n3. Preliminary experiments point toward two paths of current withinnthe tooth----through the apical foramen, and through the dentinal tubules and periodontal membrane.n4. Ionic desensitization appears to be a two-stage process in almost every case, with an immediate-temporary desensitization, followed by a delayed-permanent desensitization.
