ENGINEERING ANALYSIS OF THE MODEL 1 ARMY ARTIFICIAL HEART PUMP

An engineering analysis was made of the performance capabil¬ities of the Model 1 Army Artificial Heart Pump. The pump was shown to be load sensitize in about the same way as the human heart is, its output varies directly with filling pressure and inversely with outflow resistance. In addition, pump output was shown to vary directly with input air pressures and with the mag¬nitude of suction developed around the ventricle. The analysis demonstrated that the controls on the pump could be used to achieve a variety of output pulse shapes.
