STUDY OF GROUND-MOTION EFFECTS ON THE CONTENTS OF BURIED STRUCTURES

This paper considers the many facets of ground-notion damage to the contents, both animate and inanimate, of buried shelters used for protec¬tion against nuclear weapons. It includes a discussion of possible shock-mitigation and evasion schemes. An extended experimental program based on design accelerations, velocities, and transient displacements as measured In weapons tests is outlined. The economics of various isolation systems are discussed, major design and test areas are delineated, and priorities for work in the experimental program are suggested.nThe study, a survey and analysis of reports and data on the subject, was sponsored by the Defense Atomic Support Agency through the Bureau of Yards and Docks.
