Empirical analysis of the ballistocardiogram has revealed a significant correlation with heart disease and aging. This suggests that a more detailed analysis, one in terms of physiological parameters, might improve the correlation to the point of diagnostic signifi¬cance. The mathematical model of the ballistocardiogram as described by Noordergraaf is investigated for use in this analysis.nThe mathematical model can be adapted to a practical, clinical procedure with certain modifications and instrumental aids. The modifications consist of a revision of the mathematical procedure and direct measurement of some physiological parameters which serve as input data to the model. Ballistocardiographic wave shapes thus produced with normal and abnormal parameters are similar to clinical records obtained from subjects with matching abnormalities.n1. The model should be used to study the effect of one physiological parameter while all other parameters are held constant.n2. Substitution of a digital computer for the photoelectric analog would obtain more flexibility during investigation of the model.n3. Use of the model is advocated in a clinical trial with subjects whose cardio¬vascular status is known.
