The Superior Court of Los Angeles County is the largest trial court of general jurisdiction in the world. That is, it is one of original jurisdiction rather than an appellate court, has about 150 judges and commissioners sitting in nine courthouses, and a riling rate of approximately 160,000 year. It has a multimillion dollar budget ($28,000,000 in the year ended 1961). It keeps extensive records. The-civil files, which are separately numbered, now total over 800,000. A not atypical file will be an inch thick and contain a hundred typewritten 8 1/2" x 13" pages, plus minutes, affidavits, and other printed court forms. The total volume of material is phenomenal.
