摘要

The techniques developed for measuring the fracture toughness of homogeneous materials are not applicable to heterogeneous systems. This report describes a method for measuring this property in adhesive joints, for both an opening and forward shearing fracture mode, The sample shape and the effect of modifications in geometry are discussed. A stiff loading system which permits excellent control over crack growth is also described. A nomograph is included in the report which enables the determination of and crack length from the variables obtained in the test, i.e., compliance and critical load for crack propagation.
