EXPERIMENTAL HEAT TREATMENT OF M-60 MACHINE GUN BOLTS

This report covers the development and testing of carburizing and heat treating procedures for a series of experimental M-60 Machine Gun Bolts manufactured of 9310 alloy steel.nAcceptable case and core properties were obtained with minimum heat treat distortion by quenching the subject bolts direct from a 1700°F gas carburizing treatment into a still salt bath at 400°F, followed by -100°F refrigerating and 350°F tempering treatments.nComparative low temperature impact data were obtained on carburized 8620 and 9310 material in oil quenched and 400°F salt quenched conditions.
