The balance of radiation to and from the surface of the earth la determined to a large extent by the surrounding at¬mosphere. Oases within the atmospheric envelope absorb and emit throughout the entire electromagnetic spectrum. It is therefore of great importance to study the molecular processes that account for this phenomenon. The processes and effects of absorption are the easiest to study and analyze. Almost all the atmospheric, absorption in the infrared region can be attributed to water and carbon dioxide.
