A series of density determinations were performed on the small acicular bone specimens from the ears of various mammal. In order to obtain accurate density values for extremely small specimens, a unique procedure was developed. The results of these determinations were evaluated with respect to the auditory frequency response of each mammalian order represented in the investigation. An apparent systematic ran - ordering was found, the more dense specimens being asocial d with higher values of the upper-frequency limit of hearing. The possible bases of . the observed density - frequency response relationship were considered. These considerations point up potential applications for the data from the investigation.
