CONSPICUITY OF TALL RADIO AND TELEVISION TOWERS IN MARGINAL VISUAL FLIGHT RULES WEATHER

A comprehensive study was made of marking and lighting of tall radio and television antenna towers so as to be easily detectable by aircraft pilots fly¬ing in marginal Visual Plight Rules weather during the daytime. The research used a variety of methods in¬cluding controlled flight observations and routine flight sightings of experimentally marked and lighted towers, reports of pilot experience with such towers, and scale-model tests of marking patterns.nThese studies are reported in detail, and recommendations are made for tower marking and lighting standards based on the findings and pertinent technical literature. The recommendations include requirements for at least three white lights of 100,000 to 200,000 candles flashing synchronously at 80-90 fpm. Marking should be with black and white bands 100 feet wide. Guy wire beacons and ground markings are considered to be optional features
