Development of High Performance Cold Cathode Flash X-Ray Tubes

The research and development work covered by this report was directed toward the development of a low-cost, high-performance, expendable, single-shot X-ray tube. Special emphasis was placed on making the end product compatible with the X-ray systems constructed for the Applied Physics Laboratory under earlier subcontracts. The objectives for the tube development were: (a) a tube type that could economically be used as a single-shot' device, (b) a tube that could be usable either on the three-channel pulse transformer system or with the modified Femcor surge pulsar, and (c) a tube that would meet the high performance and reliability specifica¬tions that are applicable to the multiple-pulse thermal-field (TF) emission and vacuum arc types. These objectives have all been met or exceeded.
