With the recent trend in the aerospace industry being to develop manned hypertonic vehicles capable of orbital flight and subsequent re-entry, the engineer finds himself confronted with design requirements that are quite severe. Among the most critical 18 that of the high temperatures encountered upon re-entry. With the high heat flux, present it becomes necessary to protect the crew' members and payload plus the flight equipment and under structure. This means that some, high temperature insulation system must, be employed that will reduce the heat flux to a tolerable level and still not impose undue weight penalties.
