摘要

The existing radiosonde network, with two balloon releases daily from stations approximately 200 miles apart, is adequate for obtaining data for smoothed models of the atmosphere. These models have been successfully used in numerical and long-range forecasting. Multilevel and more complex models of the future will require more detail of atmospheric structures particularly those which have continuity for periods of 2hours or more. The non-linear distri¬bution of variables in these structures can be studied by a fine network in space or by frequent observations in time. Fronts fall in this category.
