A range /range -rate collision prediction technique, implemented in a breadboard collision avoidance system (CAS) by the Bendix Radio Division under Contract FAA/BRD-43, was investigated at the National Aviation Facilities Experimental Center (NAFEC).nThe CAS was installed in two JC-131 aircraft;and the effects of terrain and relative velocity on system performance were evaluated during parallel, ascending, descending, divergent, and near collision flights over water, flat land, mountains, and cities. The purposes of the evaluation were to determine capabilities of the system concept, determine limitations of the range/range-rate (tau) technique, and provide data for direction of further development effort.nThe airborne test results confirm the validity of a collision avoidance technique based upon the tau relationship. However, when range data are derived by the ground reflection technique, inaccuracies due to irregular terrain contour result in false alarms and missed alarms.nThe principal recommendation is that the tau technique be seriously considered for further application in any new development of a collision avoidance system.
