In accordance with ideas advanced by Vestine and Chernosky, a method was developed to record variations in the earth's field giving a variable-area record in¬stead of the conventional line trace. The recording device is the Magnetovariograph, which was built by Ruska Instrument CorporationnA suitable Analyzer was required to provide the detailed magnetic field infor¬mation available from these magnetograms. A photoelectric Sweep Scanner and an electronic Analyzer which provided conversion of data to digital form and summation of value over a series of scans were designed to meet the requirements. The Data output of the Scanner is converted in the Analyzer to clock pulses, a 10 millisecond scan time corresponding to 1000 counts. Difference between successive scans are obtained by subtractor circuits and later averaged to give rates of change. Results from both summing and subtracting circuits are punched indecimal form on IBM cards.
