摘要

As part of a program to develop an HY-130/150 base metal for submarine hulls, the Applied Research Laboratory evaluated 12 mill-treated 1/2-inch-thick plates cross-rolled from production electric-furnace heats of four promising steels (HY-80, 3 3/4 Ni-Cr-Mo-V, 5 1/4 Ni-Cr-Mo-V, and 7 1/2 Ni-Cr-Mo). The plates were quenched and tempered on the Homestead District "Works 160-inch-mill continuous heat-treating lines to at least two different yield strengths in the range 130 to 150 ksi.nThe results of mechanical-property tests indicated that the 1/2-inch-thick mill-treated plates of the four steels met the present yield-strength (130 to 150 ksi) and notch-toughness (50 ft-lb minimum energy absorption at O F) requirements for an HY-130/150 steel. The differences between the mechanical properties of the top and bottom locations in the plates were insignificant. However, the transverse Charpy V-notch energy absorptions of the HY-80 steel plates, which were cross-rolled 9.2 to 1, were 28 to 60 ft-lb lower than the corresponding longitudinal values.
