RESEARCH ON RPOCEDURE FOR THE LOW-TEMPERATURE PRESERVATION OF BLOODⅩⅢ: USE OF THE PLASMA VOLUME EXPANDER HAEMACCEL AS A RPOTECTIVE ADDITIVE IN THE LOW TEMPERATURE PRESERVATION OF BLOOD

Haemaccel is a cross-linked partially degraded gelatin produced by Behringwerke, A.G., Marburg-Lahn, Germany, for use as a plasma volume expander (3. 5% solution). We have obtained samples of the most concentrated material available, a 10% solution for use as a possible freeze-thaw protective blood additive.nPost-thaw red cell recoveries of up to 90% were attained using an additive prepared by three-fold concentration of the 10% Haemaccel solu¬tion by dialysis against solid polyethylene glycol ("Carbowax" 20 M). However, this method of preparation posed too many problems to warrant further experimentation.nFollowing deionization and addition of sodium chloride the 10% Haemaccel solution was utilized as a suspending medium for freeze-thaw protection of red cells. Results were uniformly poor, the highest recovery attainable following various treatments being 61%.
