The principles of self-magnetic compression and magnetic pumping in a mechanically constricted arc column were used in an attempt to isolate the cathode region from the remainder of a d-c arc at one atmosphere pressure. The arc device was a cylindrically symmetric, vertical configuration, with the region between a throated-tungsten cathode and a water-cooled, copper constrictor enclosed in a vycor tube. Above the constrictor which contained a 0.476 cm diameter orifice, the arc column and a copper, water-cooled anode were open to the atmosphere. Argon was injected, with a vortex flow, into the enclosed cathode chamber.
